The first-run Supes were available from approximately , and mostly featured 6-ply, 9mm thick all-Birch shells without reinforcement rings although earlier models were built with a 4-ply, 6mm thick all-birch shells with reinforcement rings. The company revived the line again in as the Superstar Classic , and while the shells are much different, these drums do seem to share the sonic soul of their predecessors. Tama was nice enough to send over a 5-piece shell pack for review, and I found them to be an outrageous value considering the price. Tama Power Craft II — Clear 1-ply batters and resonants on toms, coated 1-ply batter and clear resonant on snare drum, clear 1-ply batter and vintage coated resonant both with internal edge muffling rings on bass drum Finish: Midnight Gold Sparkle wrap Extras: Star-Mount suspension mounts, Starclassic bearing edges, included double tom holder, low-mass lugs, low-mass die-cast bass drum claws, folding retractable spurs with graduated positioning markers Price: Every shell had a silky smooth inside with what felt like a light penetrating sealer — no heavy gloss. Edge and interior The next thing I keyed in on was the edges. There were a couple of dark spots in the wood, but they were very few and far between.
Tama did just that, upgrading the Superstars to percent birch, offering a better shell to complement all the other nice hardware accoutrements that the Superstar line is known for. In many ways, it still is. Though birch may not have quite as much warmth or reach quite as deeply into the low-end register as maple, bubinga, or walnut, it does offer great attack, a tight low end, and a controlled decay, which is one reason this material is so popular in recording studios.
The Superstar line comes in three configurations:

May 25, , Mine is basswood and mahagony. As for the sound, be prepared for a major difference. Rockstar Customs are a budget minded line, albit very good budget drums. The Yammie ANC are top of the line and will be substantially different in construction and sound. I had a difficult time making the transition from my Rockstars to my DW’s.
The biggest difference, IMO, was the tone of the drums. The DW’s and my current Ayotte have a lot more sustain and clarity, and they are much more sensitive to tuning adjustments. I found that I had to make a major adjustment in the way I tuned and in head slection. With Rockstars, it was slap a head on, get it in tune with iteself, find the sweet spot and go.
Not so with all maple shells. The maple shells are louder and have more sustain and tone. YMMV Logged The techniques, though they play an important role in the early stage, should not be too restrictive, complex or mechanical.

Bass drum pedal and drum throne. Advanced Edge Cutting Yes – Precise bearing edges allow drums to ring more and make them easier to tune. Drumheads Thick, single-ply factory heads are durable but do not sound as good as name-brand drumheads. Suspended Tom Holders No – Holders attached directly to the drum shell reduce drum resonance. Poplar is known for its warm sound quality with a medium attack. This means the drum shell resonance is mellow and you don’t have to hit the drums too hard to get a nice sound.
Drumheads rest on a drum shell’s bearing edges so having well-cut edges allow the shells to ring openly and fully, and makes the drums easier to tune. Having a wrap strongly attached to the shell causes the drum to resonate fully and consistently. These semi-circle metal “turtles” are attached to a drum shell and are used to tighten the drum head to the shell’s edge.
Smaller lugs means less impact on the drums ability to resonate. Thicker Drum Heads- Thicker drum heads mean warmer tone and greater durability. Tom Mounts Attached to Drum Shells – Tom mounts are attached to the drum shell by drilling holes through the wood, reducing the resonance of the drum. Other sets use a tom suspension system where the top rim of the drum is attached to the tom holder.
Vintage Drum Guide Search our web sites! I get emails all of the time with a basic drum description and a serial number from visitors in hopes I can unlock the history of their drum. I think in general serial numbers do play an important role in the commercial market especially electronics and other high end items. In the 60’s Insurance companies made it mandatory that serial numbers be put on items so they can be documented.

They are offered in beautiful opaque and woodgrain color lacquer finishes. Starclassic drums are truly excellent professional drums and are offered only “ala carte”, rather than in pre-packaged sets, allowing the buyer to purchase exactly the configuration and sizes or drums he wishes. Anyone wishing to purchase a good quality drumset packed with features and good sound, while having to stay within a budget, should seriously consider the TAMA Rockstar. Nice quality shells, heavy duty double braced hardware, excellent quality hi-hat and bass drum pedal, and the excellent tone enhancing “Star-Cast” tom mounting system all combine to make this series of drums an excellent choice for the budget minded buyer who wants to invest in a set that he won’t be tempted to “upgrade” from soon.
